HK life planning / Labour / UGC guide

For current uni students who feel stuck: scenarios, industry mapping, UGC graduate outcomes, and LD youth schemes.

Curated: 2026-07-16

data.gov.hk

Curated for CareerAck’s primary audience: current university students who feel stuck about majors, internships or first roles. Sources: data.gov.hk, Labour Department and UGC graduate outcomes. Always verify latest details on official portals; figures are directional, not guarantees.

Lost-undergrad scenarios

In later analysis, name the scenario first (major fog, internship blank, peer FOMO, pivot, final year, GBA vs further study), then give actions.

In uni, but unclear what this major leads to

Scenario: enrolled undergrad — major feels abstract; still can’t describe a day-to-day role you want.

Clarify interests via assessments, then check UGC graduate occupation groups for peer outcomes and map to CareerAck industry scenarios / paths. Aim to narrow 1–2 testable directions — not a forever decision.

Take an assessment, then map to career paths.

Want an internship, but don’t know which field

Scenario: internship season — open the board and freeze on filters; spray-and-pray gets silence.

Set filters from industry scenarios: pick one sector + one CareerAck path, ship one demoable project/cert, then apply. Track applications to see which titles respond.

Ship a virtual project, then apply on the job board.

Peers seem sorted — you feel behind

Scenario: classmates talk banking/consulting/FAANG internships; your CV feels empty and anxiety blocks action.

Swap anxiety for a two-week loop: assessment → one small project → 3–5 aligned applications → mentor report on gaps. UGC occupation data shows outcomes far wider than a few brand-name firms.

Book a mentor and turn anxiety into a gap list.

Want to pivot / cross majors, but stuck on how

Scenario: majoring in A, drawn to industry B; fear it’s too late or you’re “not legit” enough.

Pivots need transferable proof: virtual projects, portfolio, and interview drills for target B. Use CareerAck industry scenarios to name day-to-day skills — you can test without quitting your programme.

Pick a cross-field path and ship the first artefact.

Final year: thin CV, still fuzzy direction

Scenario: final year — FT applications start, but resume only lists coursework.

Use UGC occupation groups to pick a target band, then add project certs + internship/PT proof; if experience is still thin, check LD youth services in parallel. Loop: skills proof → applications → mentor report.

Check graduate employment data, then track applications.

GBA internship/job, or further study?

Scenario: weighing cross-boundary options while enrolled, or oscillating between work-first vs master’s.

Name the scene first: summer internship, post-grad FT, or further credentials. Use LD GBA youth scheme stats, then filter the job board; a mentor helps turn options into criteria (skills, cost, commute, interest).

Filter jobs, then book a mentor to set criteria.

Graduate employment

Read UGC graduate outcomes by occupation

The UGC publishes employment situation of full-time UGC-funded programme graduates by university, level of study, employment situation and occupation (on data.gov.hk). Use it to see which occupation groups your programme peers enter — then map those groups to skills you can demonstrate on CareerAck.

Open virtual projects / assessments to cover skills common in that occupation group.

Cross-check average graduate salaries by programme category

UGC also releases average annual salaries of graduates in full-time employment by level of study and broad academic programme category. Treat figures as directional benchmarks, not guarantees — combine with your internship evidence and portfolio.

Quantify outcomes on your resume; use mentor consults to align target bands.

Occupation groupings (for mapping)
